In-flight movies of DOOM

So I was "lucky" enough to see an in-flight movie on both my plane rides to get home for the holidays.

The first was "A Christmas Story" which everyone I know considers a Christmas classic but I somehow missed seeing it at all until this year. It is complete and utter dreck. The plot sucks, characters are unlikable and I really don't find it interesting at all. Oh, and also, chock full of woman-hating, patriarchy-affirming idiocy. I was pleased to see that Twisty recently posted about the movie, too. She says it much better than I can.

The other movie was "Elf", which contains the odious Will Ferrel. He's good as a President Bush impersonator but that's about it. The movie was also stupid and not worth my time. The presence of the lovely, clever, Zooey Deschanel was not enough to save it. And it too made me wince at the sexist portrayals of the female characters. There are only two and they are cardboard cut-outs of The Wife/Mom and The Love Interest. Not that the movie has characters that aren't just flat, boring charicatures but, honestly, Zooey's character (Jovie) seemed to only exist for Buddy the Elf to fall in love with. She never talks to other characters besides him, she never says anything about herself other than in relation to him and she falls in love with him for no apparent reason. What the hell? I mean, a Will Ferrel movie is going to be stupid regardless of the character or the gender but, still.
